An Open Letter to Texas Rep. Senfronia Thompson
Today I read Texas Representative Senfronia Thompson’s speech on the floor of the Texas House of Representatives. Texas was set to vote on an anti-equality ammendment to the Texas constitution, that would ban same-sex marriage and discriminate against homosexuals even further. I found her words so inspiring and moving, that I wrote her this letter:
Dear Representative Thompson,
I came across your speech regarding discrimination against gays while reading my daily dose of internet news today. As I read it, I was incredibly touched. You see, I am a gay American who is deeply troubled by the current anti-gay sentiment growing in this country. I live in the thriving liberal bastian of San Francisco. As such, when I hear about the far right’s demonizing of and discriminating against homosexuality, it is easy for me to associate prejudice with all Christians and vice versa. In fact, I have to come to equate Christianity with prejudice and hatred.
Your words reminded me that I can’t let myself make that easy association. It gives me hope to hear that there are Christians in this country who preach love, tolerance, humanity, and equality. Thank you for having such an open heart and mind, and for so eloquently sharing your openness with the people of Texas and America. I look forward to the day kindness and tolerance such as yours will overcome the bigotry and hatred that is so pervasive in our country today.
Yours sincerely,
-Aaron Hall
